John McCourt took up his appointment as RSLWA Chief Executive Officer in August 2016 after 24 years’ service in the Australian Defence Force, preceded by a career as a business and media professional.
John undertook full-time and reserve duties with the Royal Australian Air Force including service in Iraq, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea and East Timor where he was the ADF’s Senior Military Public Affairs Officer for the International Stabilization Force.
John’s military service also included OIC of the Air Force Public Affairs Specialist Reserve; Commander, Joint Information Bureau for the search for Malaysian Airlines MH370; Staff Officer, Headquarters Joint Operations Command and Senior Military Public Affairs Officer for the visit to Darwin by US President, Barack Obama.
John began his professional career as a print journalist in Perth and Regional WA. He is a former Chief-of-Staff for the Seven Network (Perth), Director of News for the Golden West Network (GWN) and Skynews Correspondent for Northern Australia. He has travelled widely and reported on major stories as a visiting correspondent in Washington DC.
John has business and media qualifications including a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and has lectured in undergraduate and post-graduate disciplines including business studies, public affairs, journalism and media law at the universities of Notre Dame Australia, Curtin and Edith Cowan. He recently completed a certificated course in cybersecurity studies through Harvard University and is currently completing a Master of Business Law.
John a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is a proud Life Member of Surf Life Saving WA, is a practicing Justice of the Peace and a recipient of a Chief of Defence Force Unit Commendation for active service.
