Conducting a Commemorative Service

Commemorative services have a strict order of conduct.

The outline for a commemorative ceremony is listed below.

Flags are to be lowered to half-mast before the commencement of the ceremony.

  • Introduction/Welcome
  • Catafalque party mounts (if applicable)
  • Hymns or other music (optional)
  • Prayers and readings (optional)
  • Commemorative address
  • Wreath Laying
  • The Ode
  • The Last Post
  • One Minute’s Silence
  • The Rouse

During the playing of The Rouse, flags are to be raised slowly to the masthead.

  • National anthem/s
  • Catafalque party dismounts (if applicable)
  • Closing Remarks
