John McCourt

John McCourt took up his appointment as RSLWA Chief Executive Officer on 24 August 2016 after more than 22 years' service in the Australian Defence Force, preceded by a career as a business and media professional.

John has undertaken full-time and reserve duties with the Royal Australian Air Force including service in Iraq, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea and East Timor where he was appointed the ADF’s Senior Military Public Affairs Officer for the International Stabilisation Force.

John served as the OIC of the Air Force Public Affairs capability; commanded of the Joint Information Bureau for the search for Malaysian Airlines MH370; was staff officer to the Chief of Staff Headquarters Northern Command and senior military public affairs officer for the visit to Darwin by US President, Barack Obama.

John began his professional career as a journalist in Perth and regional WA including The West Australian group, Seven Network, Golden West Network and Sky News Australia. He has travelled widely and reported on major stories as a visiting correspondent at the White House in Washington DC.

John has media and business qualifications including a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. John has lectured at the Universities of Notre Dame Australia, Curtin and Edith Cowan in undergraduate and post-graduate disciplines including business studies, public affairs, media law and journalism.

He is a proud Life Member of Surf Life Saving WA, a Justice of the Peace and a recipient of the Chief of Defence Force Commendation for active service.
