Western Australia has held its first ever Military-to-Civilian Career Summit.

Eighty people registered for the event designed specifically to be a one-stop-shop for Veterans negotiating their journey from the Military to the Civilian workforce.

The idea for the Summit came from Karyn Hinder.

Karyn is Founder of Working Spirit, a charity that raises awareness of Veteran employability to businesses in both the Public and Private Sectors whilst highlighting the workforce potential of military spouses/partners.

It has long been documented that Veterans can suffer significant stress as they attempt to find meaningful employment after leaving the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

The MC was RSLWA Operations Manager, Martin Holzberger AM CSC.

Guests at the start of the day included Minister for Veterans Issues; the Hon. Peter Tinley AM MLA and Working Spirit Founder; Karyn Hinder.

The keynote speech by Psychologist Joshua Hawes was received well by the audience. Mr Hawes from Critical Components previously held the position of Regimental Psychologist with the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR).

He has been deployed a dozen times to conflict zones across the globe. His personal anecdotes on transitioning back to a 'normal' job resonated with the participants.

His speech was then followed by a panel discussion on the benefits of hiring a Veteran.

Human Resource experts Ian Hyde from Competentia, Juvelle Behrendorff from Style by Juvelle, Sean Hefferon from JumpHR and Chris Johnson from Horizon HR were all generous with their advice to the group of participants.

After morning tea attendees split into group workshops covering topics such as the expectations of transferring to the benefits of using employment-oriented social networking services liked LinkedIn.

RSLWA was proud to be a sponsor of the Summit.
