Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC, Governor of Western Australia.
The festive season is a time of celebration and also of renewal when we can reflect on the achievements and challenges of the past year, and build plans for the future.
I have been honoured to serve as the Governor of our wonderful State for the past three years.
While looking forward to having a more ‘normal’ life again once my term finishes in just over four months, I have been reflecting on how grateful I am to have been given this opportunity.
Most importantly I am thankful for the much deeper understanding I now have of the wonderful and generous people we have in Western Australia, and the place that we call home.
I have met many Western Australians from all walks of life and corners of our State; young and old, many who have contributed to our communities across a diverse range of fields as volunteers, some who have been volunteering for 30, 40 or even more than 50 years, or those who raise funds for an important cause or help others to reach their potential.
I have also been reflecting on the people who continue to make outstanding contributions to our State in business as well as in research, education, health, law and order, emergency response and community service.
I reflect on the passion, selflessness, quiet dedication, innovation and resilience evinced by these individuals which is inspiring.
As we gather with loved ones this festive season, it is my hope that each of us will consider the potential we have to make a small difference to others less fortunate than ourselves, both locally and abroad, now and in our plans for the New Year.
I thank you for the spirit of kindness and mateship that I have continually witnessed in our State, and wish you a relaxing Christmas, and a fulfilling and healthy New Year.
