They are the poppy kings of Subiaco.
The City of Subiaco RSL are the recipients of the Mary Cornell Trophy, which is presented to the Sub-Branch that has sold the most poppies in proportion to membership. The City of Subiaco Sub-Branch is no stranger to this silverware, it’s the 16th time they’ve been awarded the trophy for their efforts.
RSLWA Operations Manager, Martin Holzberger AM CSC, presented the trophy to City of Subiaco RSL Sub-Branch members at the Subiaco Community Centre.
President, Dennis Williams was quick to acknowledge the support they receive from the community on Remembrance Day, the day RSLWA held its Poppy Appeal last year.
“I usually take a collection point at Subiaco Train Station,” Mr Williams said.
“And the amount of school children who jump off the train to pop in just 20 cents or 50 cents is amazing. They all know the significance of the day. Once we found someone had stuffed a $100 note into a collecting tin,” Dennis said.
The Mary Cornell Trophy was first presented in 1939/1940 to the now-defunct Wiluna RSL Sub-Branch. In 2015 Mt Lawley-Inglewood Sub-Branch received the trophy.
