This morning, Tuesday 9 September, RSL WA welcomed The Hon Matt Keogh MP, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, to speak on the Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide’s final report, delivered one year ago.
While acknowledging that significant work remains, Mr Keogh noted a decline in suicide rates and confirmed that nine of the Commission’s recommendations have been implemented, with the majority of the remaining 110 to be actioned from next year. These include the establishment of a new wellbeing agency, a sexual misconduct inquiry, and key legislative reforms.
RSL WA Vice President Miquela Riley said, “RSL WA would have liked the government’s response to have been faster, but appreciate there’s a mountain of work involved. We do want the government to get this right the first time, but we will hold the government to account as and where it is needed to make sure we get the best outcomes for veterans and their families."
