Matt Munro
Matt Munro
Matt Munro is a recently retired British Army brigadier who served for almost 30 years before settling in Perth in 2024. As a veteran, Matt has a strong affinity with the military community and values the friendships, shared experiences and sense of service that come with it. He is committed to giving back and making a positive difference to the lives of veterans and their families.
Born in Newcastle, New South Wales, and educated in southern England, Matt served as an infantry officer. His service included operational deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, the Balkans and Northern Ireland, including high-intensity combat operations. In 2009, he was commended for distinguished service in southern Afghanistan, where he commanded an infantry aviation assault company of The Black Watch, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, on multiple heliborne assaults into enemy-held strongholds. From 2013 to 2015, Matt commanded the Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. The battalion deployed to Bosnia and Sierra Leone during his tenure and prepared for a subsequent United Nations deployment to Cyprus.
Matt subsequently moved into military diplomatic and strategic roles. From 2017 to 2020, he served as the UK's Defence Attaché to Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somaliland, and from 2022 to 2024 was stationed in Nigeria as Head of the British Defence Staff, West Africa. These appointments gave him extensive experience working across international, government and multi-agency environments at the political-strategic level. He now works on strategy and growth for Saunders International Limited, a proudly Australian, ASX-listed multidisciplinary company providing critical infrastructure for Defence and government.
Matt holds a BA in English Literature from University College, University of London, a MA in Defence Studies from King's College, University of London, and an MPhil in Politics and International Studies from St John's College, University of Cambridge.
Matt is a former Deputy Colonel of The Royal Regiment of Scotland and was a board member and trustee of its associated charity. He is a member of the Highgate Branch of RSLWA and chairs RSLWA's Veterans Advisory Committee (WAVAC).
Outside work, Matt plays hockey for the Old Aquinians (Reds) and the WA State Over 50s team, and enjoys running. He is married to Iva and is the proud father of two children.
